Portobello Road: Savoury Gin

Portobello Road Savoury Gin

They say:

As with a few of our other expressions, our Savoury Gin started life as a Distillery product, served exclusively at our home at 186 Portobello Road. It started out as a gin we called King Theodore of Corsica, an experiment which was once again inspired by our delving into the history of gin drinking in London. Sounds like a curious name for a gin, ‘King Theodore of Corsica’, but once upon a time there were many curious names for gin, such as Madame Genever, Diddle, Crank, Hearts Ease, Cats Water, Lighting, Daffy, to name but a few!

Joining the classic set of botanicals that we use for Portobello Road London Dry Gin, we also add, bergamot, rosemary, basil and green olive, and like with our Navy Gin we add just a tiny pinch of sea salt after distillation to give it that slight hint of coastal air.

We say:

If we hear anyone else telling us that savoury drinks are the future, we might well lose our sh1t. The only savoury drink we can endorse is Bovril. That said, this isn’t savoury really, there are just botanical notes in here that we associate with savoury dishes. And when offset with the more traditional botanicals. There is a distinct rosemary note on it, but this and the basil actually work to deliver a much softer, less sharper, citrus impact, there’s still sweetness and juniper and it’s a subtle suspicion of salt. All in all, this combo really lends the gin to a dirty martini. The team recommends mixing it with a tonic or soda that support some of these flavours, we liked it with the London Essence Grapefruit & rosemary Tonic because the extra hit of citrus from the mixer really added a new dimension.
