Sustainability is at the forefront of everything that this Finnish distillery does – from a social, ecological and economic point of view from the beginning.
To ensure that future generations can enjoy Finnish rye, Kyrö is committed to promoting the UN Sustainable Development Goals, and focus on issues that affect the environment and reduce inequality.
Energy consumption is kept to a minimum via its new whiskey distillery which uses biogas for energy – produced from pork manure and waste. Currently, 99.9% of the energy in the distillery and visitor centre is also produced through renewable energy sources.
PRODUCTION
First and foremost, all the production related activities at their distillery in Isokyrö are operated on 100% renewable energy forms.
Mostly by biogas, but also wind energy. The cooling system at the whisky distillery is op[1]erated with the water from river Kyrö without any contamination and waste. After the cooling circulation the water returns to the river unharmed.
The bill from the distilling process is used to feed cows in the local farms and, we also supply the local water plant with ethanol to keep the bacteria and ecosystem there happy and thriving. The methanol, generated in the process, is used to keep the local sewage clean.
VISITOR CENTRE
The Kyrö Visitor Centre restaurant at the distillery premises has been awarded with the Green Key certificate for sustainable travel. All their visitor activities aim to leave as small a footprint as possible to the surrounding nature. They offer their visitors electric car charging, they have a biogas station across the road from the visitor centre and, encourage tourists to lend bikes from us to go on tours around Isokyrö.
PACKAGING
Their bottles are packed in eco certified packings, and they are currently in the process of finding new and lighter solutions to their bottles to reduce the carbon footprint. This process is forever ongoing and evolves throughout their portfolio product by product.
COMMUNITY
As well as working proactively with local equality associations, Kyro strives to reduce inequalities in the local community. What’s more, there have been loads of small but crucial sustainable decisions made as part of its unswerving commitment to sustainability.
